  5. WHAT IS !SIMNET?
  6. The program !SimNet is a Network Manager. It allows the 
  7. administrator of a network to perform the following main tasks:
  8.  
  9. • View and edit password files;
  10. • Determine resources used by users; and
  11. • View the network topology.
  12.  
  13. !SimNet has been designed to allow easy manipulation of 
  14. password data for groups of users, as opposed to the single user 
  15. orientation of the Level 4 !Manager program. It presents password 
  16. file data in a table much like a spreadsheet. System administrators 
  17. can perform multiple edits and value replications to quickly create 
  18. password files for large numbers of users.
  19.  
  20. The program is designed to allow the rapid generation of new 
  21. password files by importing data in a number of formats, such as 
  22. CSV and TAB files. These formats can be generated from text 
  23. editors, databases or spreadsheets. Thus the administrator is 
  24. allowed to create all password data in his or her favourite tool and 
  25. then import the data into !SimNet to create a valid Level 4 
  26. password file. Any fields not specified in the imported file are 
  27. assigned default values.

  30. Once imported, field values across a range of users can be 
  31. modified in one operation. For example, on import the per user 
  32. disk space allocation may be 512KBytes. To change this for a 
  33. subset of 100 users, the values are marked in the spreadsheet 
  34. display, the first value is altered to a new value, say 2MBytes, and 
  35. the replicate option is chosen from the edit menu to copy the new 
  36. value to all marked cells.

  38. When a network is up and running, the administrator needs 
  39. access to status information to ensure smooth operation 
  40. continues. !SimNet provides details on a number of useful 
  41. statistics. On the issue of security, !SimNet provides counts of the 
  42. number of users with 'system' privilege and the number of users 
  43. without passwords. It will also highlight such users in the 
  44. spreadsheet display.

  46. The password file is not the only location of useful maintenance 
  47. information. !SimNet will also analyse disk usage to provide a per 
  48. user report to help identify a) users hogging space; and b) users 
  49. who have not created any files at all. Another useful statistic is the 
  50. last time an account was used, which can be used to find very old 
  51. accounts that can be removed from the system.

  53. Sometimes knowledge of the machines connected on a network 
  54. becomes out-of-date. A useful facility is to provide a graphical 
  55. representation of the network. !SimNet will display a picture of 
  56. each machine found on directly connected networks and for each 
  57. will show the machine type, the station number and the network 
  58. number. This map can be output to an attached printer and used 
  59. as a record. (Note: this will be extended in future releases to allow 
  60. real-time monitoring of the network to identify crashed machines 
  61. raising appropriate alarms.)

  63. !SimNet is an application which operates under RISCOS 3.1 or 
  64. higher. It conforms to the Application Style Guide, which to the 
  65. user means that it employs a style of operation similar to other 
  66. RISCOS applications. Windows, Dialogue Boxes, Menus, Help 
  67. and Hot Keys are all used in a standard way. On-line help is 
  68. available through the !Help application and additional help may be 
  69. displayed in a browse window. !SimNet employs the Fileserver 
  70. Protocol Interface defined in the Programmer's Reference Manual, 
  71. Section 48.

  74. STRUCTURE OF THIS MANUAL
  75. The next chapter describes how to install !SimNet on your server 
  76. or network client station. It also defines the hardware and software 
  77. pre-requisites of the package. Chapter 3 leads the user through 
  78. each of the major facilities available. It can be used as a tutorial 
  79. guide to the network management operations provided.

  82. This manual assumes that the reader is familiar with the Level 4 
  83. File Server and the existing !Manager program.
